Dark Blue Hues
Do you remember Joel’s blog about his addiction to blue? It must be contagious, because I’m hooked on it, too.
Perhaps my new love for blue was a natural progression, seeing as purple was the dominating colour in my life for the past couple of years. Similar in hue, but a lot less girly, blue (the darker, the better) has definitely got my attention.
This coup-de-foudre began when I set eyes on a lovely shade called Cairo by Para Paints, which was featured in our January 2011 issue. Picked as one of 15 trendy new colours, I was completely smitten.
Before bringing this new shade into my space, I compiled a few inspiration photos of rooms that showcased it best. Here are a few of my favourites:
Reminiscent of a great pair of denim jeans, this wall colour is the perfect shade. I’ll be carrying this photo with me when shopping for paint.
I love blue against this crisp white sofa. I would probably add a third colour to this room, but overall, I adore the fresh look of this space.
The textured wall covering is to die for! Don’t you just want to run your hands over it? This room also makes me want to redo all my floors in a mahogany finish — too bad I live in a rental.
Although there’s no way I could live in this blue box, I like the idea of pairing such a masculine colour with feminine accents like a hot pink sofa and crystal chandelier.
So, I began my quest for blue by adding some new throw pillows to my sofa. Being my crafty self, I decided to make my own with some fabric I already had. I kept them simple (I’m no seamstress!) and embellished them with buttons and bows. I liked the idea of coordinating all the pillows, while keeping them slightly different. I also made a wooly pink pillow as per the blue and pink inspiration in the previous photo. I love how the dark blue stands out against my silver & grey feather pillows, which I had purchased at HomeSense last fall. This was definitely an easy, impermanent way to add blue to my living room, but now I think I’m ready to add some navy paint!
Whether you decide to buy a sapphire couch or a new pair of jeans, pick up on this trend and feel blue this season!
