Jean-Michel Basquiat: Now’s The Time

From now until May, Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario plays host to Canada’s first major retrospective of work by graffiti artist turned art star Jean-Michel Basquiat, and, you’ll be totally unsurprised to hear, it is really, really good. Anyone with even a passing interest in art can namecheck the neo-expressionist wunderkind, but it’s almost jarring how current his work feels, considering it was painted 30 years ago. Raw and dense with meaning, the themes in Basquiat’s paintings — of racism, income inequality, exploitation and identity — still resonate in 2015. And of course, there’s that hip hop seal of approval.
