Michael Penney’s Revered Rugs
Ever notice how a great rug can really make a room? Often the design of a beautiful space actually begins with the rug and wall colour, then fabrics and furniture follow. Statement rugs are all over the place and can cost a mint, let me tell you! But what if you’re looking for a lovely, showstopping rug for a reasonable price? They can be hard to find!
Here are some of my faves right now (and where to get ’em):
Ikea has a new collection of Persian style rugs that I’m really loving! The colours are just right — I definitely prefer them over the wine-red ones. Here’s a tip: To make these rugs look more like old, antique kilim carpets, flip the new Ikea rug over and use it wrong-side-up. I love this look. $349.
This jute rug from Pottery Barn is my favourite! It goes with everything and I love the fringe detail. It’s one of the cheapest rugs they carry, but the best looking of all (in my opinion). I actually have an 8’ x 10’ at home — it adds that perfect, casual note. $69-$349.
This graphic rug from West Elm is another winner for a great price. The au currant diamond pattern is bang-on and the high contrast colour combo is at once edgy and chic. Throw this in a pretty and traditional space and watch the sparks fly! $39-$649.
Okay, if you don’t know that awning striped cotton flatweaves are in style, you must be living under an undecorated rock! These puppies are everywhere, and for good reason. They ooze understated cool and add a layer of couldn’t-care-less-ness that just feels right. They add graphic punch, colour and a hint of youth and ease. This one is from my favourite source, Dash & Albert. You can get them in select Canadian stores and online. $38-$525.
