Painting A Teen’s Bedroom
Q. We would like to redecorate our 13-year-old daughter’s bedroom. The room is small with a cathedral ceiling. I would like some colour options and advice on whether we should we paint the ceiling as the room is very small. What are the current trends for teenagers? She likes stars.
A. The trend for teenagers right now involves plenty of colour. Bright, bold colours are found everywhere, from colourful, sparkly bracelets and embroidered T-shirts to bright purple or orange school notebooks and journals.
While painting your daughter’s entire bedroom orange may be a little dramatic, think about a more neutral palette that will be a good base for the bold bursts of colour you can add with bedding, pillows and lamps.
Painting the cathedral ceiling the same colour as the walls is a good idea. A different colour used on the ceiling may visually break up the space, making the actual wall height seem low. If your daughter likes stars, look for a star-shaped mirror, picture frames and lampshades with star cutouts.
Should you decide to go with vibrant coloured accents in this bedroom, choose a neutral, pale yellow for the walls and ceiling like Benjamin Moore’s Hawthorne Yellow (HC-4). Bright coloured linens, storage boxes and accessories will really pop out from the pale yellow.
As your daughter gets older and her tastes change, the pale yellow, if you decide to keep it, will still be a great backdrop for new accents and ever-changing trends.
