Pantone’s New Hue: Minion Yellow

For the first time in three years, colour pros Pantone have developed a new hue — and it’s all thanks to Pharrell Williams. The superproducer, who created the music for the Despicable Me movies, including 2014’s favourite earworm, Happy, had the idea for a custom hue based on the franchise’s adorable sidekicks. Around the same time, the Pantone Colour Institute identified a growing demand for energizing, playful colours. The result: Minion Yellow. According to a press release, the company “worked closely with the animation team at Illumination Entertainment to review the existing colour range and to identify the most pure representation of the Minions’ iconic yellow colour.” It’ll be added to the Fashion, Home + Interiors palette this summer.
