Party-Ready Rooms

As an apartment dweller, I can’t even imagine having the luxury to devote not one, but two rooms to dining and entertaining. So when the December 2010 issue of House & Home arrived at the office, I was instantly enchanted by Connie Braemer‘s dual dining room project, featured on page 138. It’s the perfect place to throw a New Year’s Eve party.

The main dining room is a bright and airy space reminiscient of an art gallery. The graphic palette of white, black and hits of red creates an elegant place to sit down to dinner. The drum shades are a great way to add sparkle in an unexpected way; not only are they reflective, but inside are chandeliers instead of plain light fixtures. I like the idea of lighting as a glamorous surprise that guests only see once they sit down.

If you peek through the doorway at the end of the table, you can see the second room in this project. Designed as a ‘spillover’ space for buffet dinners, a bar area or an even more intimate affair, this room takes the cake. The crisp contrast of the birch branches against the dark blue walls is amazing, and I love how the natural light from the floor above streams through and frames the table. While this space isn’t quite my style, I admire people who are gutsy enough to go full-out with a look. Dark and dramatic never looked so good!
