Pretty Teen Bedroom
Q. My 14-year-old daughter is ready to redecorate her room and leave behind the candy colours and teddy bear theme. Her favourite colours are spring pinks, mauves, greens, blues and yellows. She has a double-sized white hoop bed, three pieces of white furniture, a large white bookcase and a maple desk. We would keep these items but would add window coverings over the blinds, new bedding and floor coverings.
A. If your daughter favours pastels, choose a few staples, like pink, yellow, green and blue, and use them for inspiration.
Florals are always popular, so for bedding, go ahead and choose a small print that can be mixed with a hip, lively stripe or go for a large, bold floral that can be contrasted with solids.
The white furniture is a great backdrop for a pastel room, and will not compete with other colours. A simple roman blind in a coordinating fabric will unify the room, but if you want to keep your existing blind for privacy, install a simple wooden rod over the windows and hang drapery panels on either side of the window. Choose simple cotton panels, in either solid or narrow stripes, or try using light, airy sheer panels. Be sure that the curtains just touch the floor, otherwise they might look a little dated.
A neutral floor covering is a good bet, as rugs can be expensive. Choose ones that may last through your daughter’s next few phases and trends. Wool sisal rugs come in various neutral shades, and can be bound in contrasting or neutral colours.
Plastic desk and shelving accessories in pastel shades or even in natural wicker will give your daughter places to store her school supplies and odds and ends and will also help tie the room together.
