Spring Has Sprung

I recently attended the spring/summer 2012 preview for Canadian Tire, and I left all eager for warm temperatures, patio entertaining and barbecuing. They have tons of new items rolling out, many of which are exclusive to Canadian Tire. Here are a few things that caught my eye for outdoor entertaining:

Canadian Tire is introducing an exclusive Umbra Loft line of patio furniture that is perfect for small backyards or condo balconies. You can see to the right that the lower boxes flip around for storage space beneath. I love that the seat cushions aren’t too bulky, and this shade of charcoal fabric looked super sharp.

No space for a sectional? Two of these loungers with foot rests would do the trick. Umbra Loft 2-Piece Lounger, $170.

Canadian Tire also had some gorgeous outdoor throw cushions priced under $13 each. I love this soft teal colour. Pick up a few pillows to lend a cosy, indoor feel to an outdoor space.

The Monterey Dual Motion Love Seat is cushioned with UV-protected olefin fabric, and even comes with two throw cushions. This tropical pattern would add a hit of colour to a balcony, patio or front porch. Monterey Dual Motion Love Seat, $230.

Plus, each side of the love seat reclines separately — brilliant!

Muskoka chairs are a Canadian staple, and this bright red makes them even more Canadian. A couple of these lightweight plastic versions are a timeless addition to any backyard. Plus, they’re affordable enough to buy several as extra seating for a big summer party.

They had a few outdoor table and chair sets for sale in this slatted wood-like finish with powder-coated, rust-resistant steel frame that makes the line both practical and nice to look at. The finish makes the collection look more like indoor furniture than the metal sets you often see. Monterey Slatted Dining Table, $150.

This low coffee table with fire pit would make a nice focal point around a chair grouping, and is perfect for cool fall evenings when you still want to be outdoors. Verona Firebowl, $130.

Several of their outdoor displays had these simple floor tiles that can be laid down overtop your existing patio. They would add warmth and texture to a builder-basic condo balcony.

And to my delight, the barbecues were out in full swing! This compact version on the left is a space saver for a smaller yard, and the Japanese Kamado Pro Charcoal Grill on the right is a ceramic vessel that can grill, smoke and bake. Father’s Day is fast approaching!

For camping trips this summer, consider picking up a compact grill that you can easily transport in a car trunk.

Tangerine is the colour of 2012, and these outdoor dishes are right on trend. I love the large melamine dinner plates with subtle hit of pattern. Meadow Dinner Plates, $4 each; Meadow Salad Plates, $3 each; Meadow Bowls, $3 each.

How many times have you been milling around a backyard party with food plate in one hand and drink in the other, contemplating how you’ll actually eat? This plastic plate has a groove that will hold a glass, and comes in a set of nine with three other fun colours. A must for any summer fête! 9-Piece Picnic Goblet/Plate Set, $30.

These counter drink dispensers are everywhere this season. The glass ones are great on a kitchen counter with some lemon water, but this plastic version is perfect for the backyard this summer. Plus, it’s set on a stand so you can easily place glasses under the nozzle without perching it on a ledge. Bark Beverage Dispenser on Stand, $40.
