Playing with furniture scale, pattern and shape can be a tricky business. The good news is that the days of decorating with pattern and colour are back. Have a little fun — who cares if your friends don’t dig the new look right away? What’s important is that the design makes you smile. “Statement pieces” in the home are hot right now — bold patterns and shapes are taking hold on everything from lighting to your living room sofa.
I love this room from Elle Decor’s April 2010 issue. The contrast of the patterned sofa, flanked with white chairs, and grounded by the black ottoman and lamps is just perfect. I could live with this colour.
When friend Arren Williams mentioned to me last year that he was reupholstering his living room sofa in hot pink, I bit my lip and said, “That sounds lovely.” You know what? It is. More importantly, it’s him and fits his style.
Check out these sofas below — they are sure to make a statement.
The nailhead detail on this sofa from Shine Home is totally fun.
The white frame with velvet upholstery elevates the groovy vibe of this Jonathan Adler sofa.
This Anthropologie piece feels very bespoke. The handmade feel of the upholstery with the lady-like frame is odd, but it works and certainly offers a statement.
