Stunning Outdoor Spaces
As the temperature rises, our thoughts turn to fixing up our back and front yards. So, here’s a round up of some drool-worthy patio spaces from some of our favourite design blogs. Take a cue from these and make the most of your outdoor spaces with warm tiles, comfy furniture and personalized accents.
Bring the indoors out. Desire to Inspire featured Jeff Herron’s space this week. Who wouldn’t love to sip a glass of wine on this patio? Glossy tiles underfoot and wood planks on the ceiling make this indoor-outdoor space feel more like a sitting room.

Use plants to boost privacy. Even if your patio is quite open, work with what you have. Shelterpop posted photos of this mod California home a while back, and even though the space backs onto a residential street, it’s still welcoming, comfortable and perfect for entertaining. If high fences make you feel boxed in, keep the view and line the space with plants, shrubs and lighting to distinguish your urban retreat from the street.
Invest in an outdoor fireplace. Then, make it the focal point. This courtyard sanctuary, from My Favourite and My Best, is full of homey elements that add to the warmth of the brick fireplace, including casual stools, a low table, a mirror above the fireplace and hits of colour in a boho rug. Only the lush greenery reminds you that’s it’s actually an outdoor patio.
Make the most of your front porch. If you live in the city, sans backyard, take a cue from photographer Corbin Gurkin. Her Charleston home (featured on design*sponge) is the epitome of coastal chic. Make your porch more livable, like Gurkin’s, by introducing your favourite colour scheme. Planters, hammock, shutters, front door — Gurkin even painted out her floorboards in a soft aqua. Using a bit of colour can transform your front entrance from ho-hum to an inviting oasis. Al fresco tea party, anyone?
