The Not Finished Basement

Nothing seems to be happening this week and I don’t deal with the reno stall very well. Kimberley (one of our H&H editors and a fellow blogger) encouraged me to celebrate the stall and dream a little about something not basement-reno related. And here it is:

This house is my latest obsession. I have been driving past it for years as I take old Highway 3 back to Toronto from my parents’ house. Every trip it looks worse but I love it nonetheless. I finally took some pics and showed one of our photographers (who I had introduced to the 1975 documentary Grey Gardens. The same house that has been so in the news lately because of the HBO biopic about Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale, starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lang). His response: “You’ve got your own Grey Gardens here.”

Check out The New York Times pictures of the real “Grey Gardens” and you decide:

You can see the interior shots here. Thing is, I wouldn’t restore it to its former glory, but do an updated or modern country look.

My favourite country house ever is by interior designer Darryl Carter and was published in Elle Decor. Take a look at this beauty. If this isn’t inspiring, I don’t know what is:

Granted, the reno job on this would be almost impossible and certainly more daunting than the little basement reno I am so currently frustrated by. But dreaming is necessary, especially when your life is covered in drywall dust.
