Yes, Country Style Is Back

Okay so last time I asked, “Is country back?” This time, I think the answer is obvious. A quick perusal of the marketplace has reinforced this hunch with a resounding, “DUH!” Rustic, homespun, timeworn — whatever you want to call it, this look is everywhere and people are diggin’ it.

Top-notch designers like Darryl Carter, who are published in all the best mags and even put out their own books, are perfect examples of the look.

Darryl’s dining room in his Washington D.C. townhouse has it all — white washed paneling, harvest table, hutch, and vintage china and silver. It’s rustic, but oh so elegant.

NYC darling John Derian has come out with a gorgeous line of what I’m calling ‘neo-antiques’. Their slightly exaggerated silhouettes remind me of the Adams Family a little bit. I covet this settee something terrible!

Photo Yes Country Is Back Lamp

Derian’s country love runs deep with this famous decoupage table lamp festooned with cheery hollyhocks. But just to illustrate that this country look isn’t some lowbrow, poor-man’s attempt at style, this lamp goes for a cool $2,650 USD.

Ethan Allen is on trend with their American Classics collection. I am dying to get this Quincy Bed into a photo shoot soon, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen similar beds in people’s homes just waiting for a chic coat of black paint like this. Do it yourself, people!

Photo Yes Country Is Back Dresser

A picture of this Ethan Allen Highboy Dresser has been taped to my office wall for months now and I still get weak in the knees for its classic good looks. And that hardware — it’s baaaaaaack! Note: black again — that makes it cool.

Now for some more affordable options. Can’t shell out for that priceless antique textile? Pottery Barn’s got this cutie Red Feather Quilt on sale now. Can’t you just see this on the perfect simple iron bed?

Photo Yes Country Is Back Ikea Bed

Oh look! How perfect — Ikea’s Lillesand bed is only $190!!!!!

Photo Yes Country Is Back Ikea Chest

Round out this delightful bedroom scene with a charming Hemnes Chest from Ikea and you’re off to the races. Load up the dresser top with vintage teacups and saucers to hold your necklaces and bracelets in stylish carefree abandon.

Photo Yes Country Is Back Wing Chair

The wing chair is making a HUGE comeback — originally designed with sheltering ‘wings’ to protect shoulders from drafts and provide the perfect warm spot to curl up. Your house may not be old and drafty, but you need one of these chairs! Find this Traditional Wing Chair at Sears for $350.

Photo Yes Country Is Back China

Reed & Barton partnered with one of my design heroes, Thomas O’Brien, to create this twist on classic blue and white china. I am honestly considering using my next pay cheque to pick this up. It looks luxe but is really not too expensive! Under $100 for a place setting like this one.

You can also get the country look for less with Ikea’s Arv Dinnerware Set which is only $60 for an 18-piece place setting. There’s just no excuse for not being on trend here!

And you’ve gotta use that china to set a stylish table. This handsome fellow is from Sears! I am SURE I’ve seen his twin at Elte.

Photo Yes Country Is Back Chair Rocking

And when you’re done running around the marketplace for all these fantastic and affordable country pieces, you can kick back in this timeless rocker from Sears. Just pull out that red and white quilt and snooze away on the front porch.

More Darryl Carter — just to prove my wing chair theory.

Now what about these vintage wing chairs I spotted for under $100 each last week? I love those curvy wings and their refined proportions. Reupholster in solid linen? Grey wool? My imaginary farmhouse is filling up…

Check out last week’s blog post, when I first caught on to this country theme.
