Discover A J.Crew Designer’s Favorite Shops

Ever on the lookout for design, gardening and fashion inspiration, here are J.Crew menswear designer Frank Muytjens’ favorite shops and local hot spots near his weekend house in upstate New York.

“Amazing selection of cheeses, many local. Housed in a coveted building. The sandwich shop in the back, Rubies, has the best cappuccino around.”

“When you enter Michael’s store you feel transported to a different world. I always feel inspired when I leave and never empty handed. The way he puts his antiques together is unparalleled. His gardens in the back are private, but are part of a walking tour in the summer and are equally inspiring.”

“My go-to place for all kinds of garden ornaments and Instagram moments.”

“Amazing antique rustic furniture and tableware from France and Scandinavia. The aesthetic is through the roof. Great for gifts.”

“New hotel in town. Great airy lobby filled with mid-century modern classics and a great bar in the back.”

“Too many beautiful vintage light fixtures to pick from. This is where I got the chandelier and the outdoors lantern on my pergola.”

“Great book and stationary selection.”

“Super romantic, cozy little inn — rustic, creaky floors and the dining room is legendary…all candlelit with amazing murals. The food is equally amazing. I go there for special occasions.”

“Practical household goods mixed with great vintage tableware and everything in between.”

“This is where I get most of my plants…they have special shrubs that are hard to find. And the staff is super knowledgeable and helpful.”

“A perfectly well curated hidden gem…I always stock up on the homemade croissants. The outdoors terrace in the back is peaceful with nothing but the sound of the stream running close by. Great to use as a base when hiking in nearby Beartown State Forest.”
