City Chic
Blue-pa inted vanity + white counter + matte black faucet + richly patterned rug
To address the clients’ need for storage in this principal bathroom , designers Erin Feasby and Cindy Bleeks incorporated a large built-in cabinet and a furniture-style vanity with six drawers that complements the adjoining bedroom. “The bathroom feels like an extension of the bedroom when the doors are open,” says Erin, adding, “It’s the perfect combination of luxurious, timeless, urban and cool.”

Golden Glow
Porcelain-clad walls + warm metals + sculptural tub + pale wood
“The big thing about the cottage is the spectacular view and that it blends in to the rock face,” says designer Lorraine Franklin of her home on the shore of Lake Joseph in Ontario’s Muskoka region. The principal bathroom feels similarly set in stone, with large-format Laminam slabs lining the walls around the freestanding tub and in the spacious shower. Made from durable, lightweight porcelain, the material is easier to install than heavier natural stone such as granite or marble and can be pattern-matched to add a sense of repetition and movement. Paired with warm gold-toned faucets and fixtures, and a run of floor-to-ceiling windows, the entire room appears lit from within — sunset views welcome, but not required.

Timeless Elegance
M arble hex tile + white-painted panelling + natural wood vanity + mixed metals
Although this bathroom is a recent addition to a Montreal century home, Mélanie Cherrier designed it to appear as if it’s been here all along. To achieve a historical look, she added traditional panelling to the walls and classic hexagonal Carrara marble tile on the floor. A custom-made vanity in mid-tone white oak with capped brass feet reads like a chest of drawers and is paired with brass-finished hardware, wall sconces and an arched mirror selected for its Parisian style. For the faucets and bath and shower fittings, Mélanie switched to polished chrome with classic cross handles, adding yet another historically accurate detail to the masterful mix.

Pure & Refined
Hardwood floors + polished chrome fixtures + marble backsplash + antique accents
To return character to his 125-year-old Victorian rowhouse, former H&H design editor Joel Bray looked to the sophisticated style of designers such as Rose Uniacke , Ben Pentreath and Nate Berkus , and selected materials with timelessness and decorative possibilities. To wit: a Carrara marble backsplash behind the freestanding tub adds subtle pattern and incorporates a slim ledge for displaying objects like the tall gilt-framed mirror. The traditional tub filler lends contrast to the bathtub’s modern lines. Joel selected hardwood flooring to add softness underfoot and further enhance the home’s newly restored heritage feel.
