With a new decade comes the drive to take our homes and spaces to the next level. From playing with pops of color to cracking down on organization, House & Home editors are prepping for a mindful and restorative 2020. Here, we’ve compiled our personal design resolutions to inspire your own.
Dabble In Color
“I’ve always shied away from color with the fear of outgrowing it (flashback to my pre-teen years saturated with lots of pinks and purples). This year, though, I’m committed to adding color to my space, and I’m using this living room — designed by H&H ‘s Kai Ethier — for inspiration. While this wallpaper is whimsical and vibrant, the decor in the room tones it down, creating a curated space fit for the modern woman.” — Bianca Zanotti, Assistant Design Editor

Support African Design
“Like the worldwide hit by Columbian singer Shakira, 2020 is ‘This Time For Africa.’ African design brings warmth to any space, especially during the long and cold Canadian winter. I would love to add the characteristic features of African interiors to my home, with light walls, warm colors and traditional masks.” — Frank Ngako, Digital Editor, Maison & Demeure

Manage The Mudroom
“Our entry looks like a boot explosion each and every day, with a sprinkling of dog leashes. Hoping to keep things as edited and organized in 2020 as this beauty by designer Scott Yetman.” — Wendy Jacob, Features Editor

Declutter Small Spaces
“Clutter can pile up quickly in a small space, and I want the decor that I already have to shine, so I’m resolving to put things away ASAP and do a surface sweep at least once a day. My major target areas are the kitchen island, the entryway and my desk. Clean, clutter-free surfaces for 2020!” — Jennifer Koper, Senior Editor

Decorate With Pieces That Spark Joy
“This year, I’m inspired to apply Marie Kondo’s intuitive ethos to my decorating and put my ever-growing tribe of eclectic objets on display. Life’s too short to follow the rules, so put that treasured piece on a pedestal!” — Harleen Sidhu, Assistant Editor

Get A Green Thumb
“If you ever set foot in my apartment, you would be greeted with succulents, floral arrangements and other lush plants. Confession: they’re all fake. I am a serial plant killer (not intentionally — I just forget to water them), so my resolution for 2020 is to channel my inner plant parent.” — Victoria Christie, Digital Editor

Freshen Up Fabrics
“With three small children, our banquette is starting to looking tired and worn. I want to replace it with some hard-wearing Crypton velvet or an indoor-outdoor fabric in a fun color.” — Stacy Begg, Senior Interiors Editor
