Hot Look: 5 New Ways To Decorate With Stripes

If stripes have you thinking only of nautical blue and white, think again. We’re inspired by summer’s new laid-back, surf-style versions of the beloved pattern. Get inspired by five new decorating ideas below.

Wallpaper with wider bands and plenty of white space acts as a calming backdrop for artwork with tighter stripes and cool-toned, vivid colors.

Between the hanging seashells, surfer artwork and aloe plant, this space is reminiscent of a beachfront retreat. Those searching for that sea-air-and-sandy-feet feeling can recreate the look by choosing furnishings that are low to the ground and not too tailored. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the waves crashing.

Stripes can be calming in a bedroom when layered thoughtfully. The saturated colors of a pair of pillows and a kilim are offset by a white coverlet with subtle pattern and a wall hanging adorned with black and white stripes.

Stripes can stand on their own as a single piece, but the pattern finds strength in numbers, too. Here, we see stripes on everything from an ottoman to artwork and even a guitar. Varying widths, colors and mediums are key to keeping layered stripes from feeling too themey.

Stripes are at their best in a summery table setting. Macramé placemats add a layer of crisscross lines beneath striped terracotta plates with painterly brushstrokes and starbursts. Complete the setting with a bounty of fresh fruit and an arrangement of ginger flowers.
