How House & Home Editors Prep Their Homes For Spring

With winter on its way out, House & Home editors are already planning how to welcome the warmer weather into their homes. And while fresh paint and furniture are always on the menu, styling and gardening are top of mind, too. Here are a few things H&H editors plan to do to ring in spring.

“In spring, I always try and force some branches into bloom, like these pretty apple blossoms we shot for our July 2017 issue.” — Stacey Smithers, Senior Design Editor

“I’ve been meaning to up my fruit-bowl game for quite some time and, with a bounty of fresh local fruit on the horizon, this feels like the right time to do it. After all, we look at our fruit bowl on the counter every day so why shouldn’t it be a pretty, sculptural vessel?” — Emily Evans, Associate Editor

“I know there are plenty of pastels ready to jostle it out for first place, but in all its permutations — from pale rose to fuchsia — pink spells spring.” — Wendy Jacob, Features Editor

“Much like my spring wardrobe, I like to take cues from the runway at home, too. One fashion trend that I’ll definitely be incorporating into my space this coming season is transparencies. Berlin-based designer Jacek Kolasiński’s take on the trend is simply effortless. I just love the subtle graphic look of the sheer charcoal drapes in this eat-in kitchen.” — Sabina Sohail, Junior Digital Editor

I can’t wait to swap my cozy pillows and throws for lighter fabrics! I’m saying buh-bye to plaid, velvet and sheepskin and hello to stripes, florals and gingham. Trading in your textiles is such an easy, effective and fun way to embrace spring. Bring on the pattern play and bright colors! — Adena Leigh, Digital Editor

“I like to decorate my fairly minimalist spaces with subtle, natural accents in the springtime. Small plants, bonsai and smooth stones bring just a touch of texture to my windowsills and tabletops. (And this year, I think I’ll steal Trish Johnston’s DIY doorstop idea, too!)” — Reiko Milley, Associate Editor

“Nothing says spring like a bright and tidy home — I always feel so energized after a good decluttering and organizing session. This year, I plan to give my own overflowing walk-in closet a fresh new look with a painterly rug and pretty storage bins to keep my winter wardrobe out of sight.” – Andréanne Dion, Digital Editor, Maison et Demeure

“Swapping out moodier artwork for pieces with bright, exuberant color is one of the easiest ways to reinvigorate your home for the season. I’m inspired by this Studio McGee–designed space, where a large-scale floral print is beautifully complemented by a fresh bouquet and some paisley accessories.” — Amanda Tucci, Editorial Assistant

“If you grow vegetables, like we do, spring is the time to prep the garden and optimize your planting season. And there’s a lot to do: cleaning your tools, removing leaves and other debris, fluffing up the soil and adding compost as soon as it’s workable. I like to sketch a plan and get my seeds early — planning ahead will help you make the most of the warmer days!” — Corinne Cécilia, Managing Editor, Maison & Demeure
