“One thing Robert and I have done throughout the years is curate a house not only for the 9 of us but for people from around the world: the books, the activities, the games. It’s really given us a completely different life,” says Cortney.

A naturally luxurious space crafted from Trancoso’s local materials, this eucalyptus, tatajuba, and paraju constructed space brings the family and guests a true taste of Brazilian living.

At the heart of the family’s Trancoso home is the open-air dining room, complete with a hand carved dining table (that seats 20!) and woven chairs made in collaboration with local artisans.

Lighthearted lighting brings a jungle vibe to the kitchen, where bare bulbs are adorned by leafy cutouts.

Artwork in the home includes pieces by Ann Carrington, Tony Carmaninco, Jeff Devine and local artisans. A punchy blue breakfront cabinet holds dishware.

All five bedrooms in the home are designed as intimate, private suites, kitted out with air conditioning and mosquito nets.

A casual shelving system hung by knotted ropes stashes beach wardrobe essentials like caftans and baskets of flip flops.

Nestled up in the trees, this airy bedroom features a lush canopy bed. Robert and Cortney fell in love and designed a vacation escape complete with a treehouse guest home. From this perch they can appreciate the sound of a waves crashing over the glistening ocean and gentle breezes blowing between palm trees.

A quilted artwork riffs on the the Brazilian flag and enlivens the rustic wood walls of the treehouse.

This fuchsia outdoor bathroom has communal details that make it easy to clean up a crowd.

The main porch, featuring lounge chairs, a ping pong and pool table brings everyone together for fun, relaxation, and community. For entertaining, The Novogratz have added a dome-shaped brick oven for pizza nights, right next to their outdoor bar.

The kidney shaped pool is a short jaunt from the Nativos and Rio da Barra Beach, and the ocean can be glimpsed from between the palm trees.

Vibrant local vegetation clambers over the pergola that shades the green ping pong table.
