Fashion and home decor trends both favour this rich hue.

Benjamin Moore colour experts Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault and Sharon Grech have watched purple paint trends go from a soft, feminine tone to a vibrant one for summer. “As fall approaches, we’re seeing purple represented as a deeper, more luxurious neutral in shades such as Vintage Wine (2116-20), Amazon Soil (2115-30), and Wenge (AF-180),” says Leigh-Ann.

Allow more light into your home.

Designer and TV personality Ramsin Khachi finds this fall the time for “a classic understated elegance,” created with more windows and light filtering in. Also on-trend for the season are metals of various finishes, seen here on the mirror, light and side table. To properly “define a space, ground a space and create a feeling of lushness and comfort,” Ramsin recommends choosing an appropriate rug for a room, too.

On-trend grey looks chic when paired with bolder hues.

Grey is the new white when it comes to kitchens — but generally for lower cabinets, paired with lighter colours or wood grains for upper cabinetry, says interior designer Robin Siegerman from Renovation Bootcamp and author of the upcoming book, Renovation Bootcamp Kitchen. “My personal favourite is lead grey with a hint of blue,” she says, adding that plums are being mixed with grey, too.

Moving laundry rooms and principal bedrooms to main floors is one of the latest renovation trends.

Bryan Baeumler, host of HGTV’s Disaster DIY and House of Bryan, has been busy adding these key rooms to the main floor, geared towards the retirement crowd. “This is for people who are downsizing into large bungalows or smaller two storey homes,” he says.

Cool tones get a softer look.

Warm oranges and reds are popular for fall, and work well as as accessories paired with monochromatic neutrals. Greens and azure blues are also back, “but more muted and washed out,” says designer Glen Peloso. Glen also sees eclectic, found objects mixed with chic, modern pieces.

Yurtas are tent-like structures that have become popular with the shift toward glamorous camping, says Patrick Ladisa, president of Yurta.ca. Homeowners can use these for whatever purpose they wish — be it shelter for a hot tub in the winter, or as a gazebo in the summer.

Tina Holmes, Fall Home Show Manager, shares this season’s must-haves.

“There are some incredible exotic materials and fabulous wood pieces that can bring warmth and flare to your personal space,” says Tina. Alta Moda’s new chair collection, Kairos — pictured left — is a great example.

“Taking a cue from modern architecture, Umbra’s modern Bird Café resembles a contemporary building with lots of windows.” Plus, Tina adds, “Herman Miller’s frameless back SAYL work chair brings us form and function, inspired by the principles of suspension bridges, showcased by EQ3.”
