Fruit trees planted in antique blue-and-white jardinieres make a porch both lush and luxe.

In her own home, McDonald created a restful, cosy loggia by hanging atmospheric curtains from a custom-made iron rod. The English-style furniture is upholstered in white canvas and blue-and-white Ralph Lauren fabrics.

Gilded furniture contrasts elegantly with espresso walls.

In her living room, Los Angeles-based designer Mary McDonald was inspired by China. The collection of vintage pagodas behind the sofa is particularly important to her: “the original eighteenth-century versions were made of ivory, and many others are made of bone,” notes McDonald. “I love how detailed they are, with little hanging bells and reticulated balconies with layers of faux millwork.” The clean-lined shape of the Chinese coffee table offsets the ornate formality of the room.

A seagrass runner gives a casual California vibe to a formal staircase.

In a Beverly Hills house designed for hotelier Efrem Harkham, Mary McDonald used a hand-painted graphic floor by Scott Flax as a surprising modern counterpoint to the delicate French wallpaper. The canary ceramics are a jolt of sunshine in the hushed setting.

A graphic blue and white rug grants a guest bedroom character.

In a guest bedroom in her Los Angeles home, designer Mary McDonald went regal with a royal navy blue and white colour scheme. The big velvet ottoman was made with gilded antique legs salvaged from a worn-out coffee table. The pink pillows and the pink artwork by Mia Moretti soften the overall look of the room.

A space inspired by the grandeur of old Hollywood.

Chinoiserie — such as the porcelain candlesticks with the gilt tops — and the sea — the antique dore? bronze lamp resembles a piece of coral — are just a few of the  influences in this space.

Chinese, Indian and English influences create a sense of worldly nonchalance.

“I approach decorating a bathroom as I do any other room,” says Los Angeles-based designer Mary McDonald. “And the lady’s principal bath in this hacienda estate is an extension of the boudoir in every way.” The sofa makes the bathroom feel like a luxurious spa, while the “Gloria Swanson-goes-to-Rajastan” mirror, antique Chinese vases and Lefroy Brooks handset on the tub create a global feel.
