    Festive Paper Garland

A fun DIY decoration stands out against a white staircase.

H&H senior design editor Sarah Hartill crafted this three-dimensional garland to add a joyful atmosphere to an all-white stairwell. Despite its layered look, it was a fairly simple DIY: Sarah simply opened up pre-made paper decorations and secured them to the banister with clear fishing line.

    Holiday-Ready Hallway

A bright white passageway prepped for the festive season.

A stunning conservatory-style skylight illuminates designer Betty Theodoropoulos’s handsome hallway, shining a natural spotlight on a bench piled high with gifts, a lush Christmas garland and pots of wintry paperwhites.

    DIY Paper Lanterns

    A softly lit holiday mantel.

Letter cut-outs spell out a classic Christmas message on this festively-decorated mantel. To make your own lanterns, simply stencil letters on white paper bags and carefully trim with a sharp craft knife, then paste sheets of clear vellum on the inside of the bags behind each letter. Insert battery-powered tealights to cast a warm (and safe) glow.

    Jillian Harris's Christmas Tree

    A glowing holiday vignette.

Designer, former Bachelorette, and Love It or List It Vancouver host Jillian Harris dressed her sparkling copper-toned tree with a collection of inexpensive baubles, family heirlooms and mercury-glass ornaments. She then wrapped her presents with pretty ribbon and metallic-print paper for a cohesive look.

    Crisp White Mantel

    DIY pieces meet store-bought finds.

A minimalist wreath and miniature trees give this traditional mantel mod appeal, while a simple garland — crafted from vintage holiday cards — adds a pop of lively colour.

    Charming Mantel Decor

A cheerful design that appeals to the child in everyone.

Sweet white and red felted animals and ornaments are strung casually along this mantel to evoke a nostalgic mood. A white owl figurine and vase of plump winter berries continue the simple, lighthearted theme.

    White Country Living Room

Subtle pattern adds interest in an all white space.

Soft prints and piles of pillows and throws keep this all-white living room from feeling lifeless. In artisan Heather Shaw’s festively-decorated space, a thin-striped ottoman and pretty floral chair break up the scheme, while white lights and decorations on the tree add low-key sparkle.

    Simple Holiday Dining Room

    A minimal, yet memorable look.

A compact table, sweet miniature chandelier and set of traditional chairs create a charming, albeit tiny, dining area in Heather Shaw’s Victorian home. A simple tabletop vignette of pinecones and greenery brings the outdoors in, while a vase full of illuminated branches adds a magical glow.

    Antique Holiday Mantel

A pretty and festive focal point.

This handsome white-painted mantelpiece, dressed with fresh greenery, silver baubles and glimmering candles, cleverly draws the eye away from a utilitarian iron radiator.

    Glam Holiday Living Room

Icy silver, cool blue and crisp white make a stunning combination.

Designer Darci Ilich, co-owner of Vancouver home store The Cross, filled her pretty white living room with metallic accessories for a seriously luxe look. Glossy blue ornaments add a pop of wintry colour on her flocked Christmas tree and miniature tabletop firs.

    Flocked White Christmas Tree

A pedestal table elevates a stocky, snowy tree.

Designer Darci Ilich’s plump holiday fir gets a boost thanks to a traditional wooden table, giving it the height and presence of a much larger tree. Ilich disguised the base with a length of Tiffany blue-coloured fabric, which also adds a jolt of colour to the monochromatic space.

    Modern Holiday Decor

A bold wreath stands out in an all-white space.

To prime a dining room for holiday entertaining, consider dressing up your chandelier with pretty ribbons and classic ornaments. Here, blue and white satin ribbons pick up on the tones in the table settings, while silver baubles add sparkle.

    Decorated Holiday Chandelier

Glittering baubles and ornaments give this fixture a festive look.

To prime a dining room for holiday entertaining, consider dressing up your chandelier with pretty ribbons and classic ornaments. Here, blue and white satin ribbons pick up on the tones in the table settings while silver baubles add a hit of sparkle.

    Romantic & Wintry Table Setting

Feminine flourishes look gorgeous in cool seasonal hues.

Darci’s faux “tree-stump” is really a white-painted planter flipped upside down. A cheeky squirrel figurine and cup of greenery complete the outdoorsy look, and a uniform colour scheme keeps the effect streamlined and modern.

    Elegant Holiday Dining Room

An off-white and cool grey palette reads soft, subtle and seasonal.

Silver-toned ornaments suspended from the chandelier create a festive look in this beautiful dining room, and tie in perfectly with the wintry tones in the room’s frosty abstract artwork.

Succulents are a fresh alternative holiday greenery.

In this contemporary dining room, black accents pop against a stark white palette, while potted succulents add lush natural beauty. A contemporary painting mounted above the traditional mantel quietly captures the spirit of the season.

    Festive White & Silver Vignette

Add a dash of whimsy with an artful holiday arrangement.

Here, a silver-robed St. Nick and glittering reindeer complement tiny baubles hung on branches, while a dusting of faux snow suggests a picturesque snowfall. The all-white colour scheme lends a modern elegance to the traditional decorations.

    Haute Holiday Tree

A decorating scheme with elegant appeal.

The holiday decor of Lindsay Mens Craig, homeowner and senior designer at Sarah Richardson Design, is soft and feminine. A luxurious white feather boa and jewel-like ornaments on the Christmas tree work well with her apartment’s soft colour palette. Her generous Ikea shelving system keeps things organized while offering plenty of space to display family photos, vases and bowls.

    Blue Christmas

Pile the mantel high with sparkly Christmas balls.

On this crisp white mantelpiece, a collection of new and vintage blue ornaments blend with glistening white “snowballs” (Styrofoam balls coated in clear glue and rolled in glitter). A triptych depicting a snowy scene, painted by homeowner and designer Ian McLeod, ties in with the baubles’ cool colour palette.

    Snowy Holiday Wreaths

Cherry red pompoms make these crisp wreaths pop.

Glistening white decorations — like these flocked wreaths — mimic the now-covered seasonal landscape. For a jolt of lively colour, consider adorning them with bright red ribbon or sparkly pompoms.
