Splurge Or Save: 6 Classic Pieces For Every Budget

H&H stylist Reiko Caron shares designer favorites for every budget.
No matter how generous or limited our budgets may be, we’re all concerned with making smart design choices. There’s something so satisfying about finding a beautiful, classic piece that we can see ourselves using, and loving, for years to come. So I’ve rounded up six timeless pieces that are sure to travel with you from home to home, with options for those who hoping to save and those who want to splurge.

This is a timeless choice for a living space, particularly when upholstered in a soft neutral fabric. Both of these sofas also offer deep, generous seating, making them super comfortable picks. I’d recommend the less expensive option from Ikea for a first apartment, or for someone who wants to experiment with bold custom upholstery. The ‘high’ option from Elte, on the other hand, would make a beautiful investment piece.

Thanks to their elegant marble tops, these clean-lined pedestal tables will suit both contemporary and traditional dining areas. They’re also ideal for entertaining, offering plenty of seating space. I think this tulip-style table from Shelter is a great buy, but for a more showstopping look, check out the Pondicherry table from Avenue Road that also features a luxe Carrara marble pedestal.

There’s a reason these pillows have been popping up in homes and showrooms for so long. They’re a foolproof way to add texture; I just love their soft, feminine quality. This economical option from HomeSense would look great tossed on a sofa or bed, while these fluffy cushion covers from Williams-Sonoma will give your existing pillows an instant upgrade.

A tripod-style floor lamp is another piece that blends seamlessly with a range of decorating styles. This high-end floor lamp from Horne makes a beautiful sculptural statement, but the simple lines of Elte Mkt’s Floor Light also caught my eye.

Adding graphic pattern underfoot is a classic design move at H&H, and our editors and stylists particularly like using geometric flatweave rugs. Both of these neutral-toned options would look great in a living room, and are quiet enough for use in a bedroom. Crate & Barrel’s wool-and-cotton dhurrie is a budget-friendly choice, while Madeline Weinrib’s version is sure to make a sophisticated statement.

Since they’re so versatile, tuxedo-style chairs are smart additions to any home. They’re streamlined enough for contemporary spaces, yet also work in trad ones. They have a handsome tailored profile, but are comfortable enough to sink into. Plus, they can be set up in pairs or used alone as accent seating. I think CB2’s affordable Club chair is a great pick, but if you’re looking to splurge, check out Barrymore’s sophisticated Bond chair.
