Looking for a fresh new spin on mid-century modern? Learn from EQ3 creative director Thom Fougere! When creating EQ3’s 2018 Spring/Summer collection, he and his team took cues from coastal landscapes and desert stones, uniting modern lines with handmade textiles, ceramics and eclectic finds. “A few subtle curvatures on the Skye sofa’s frame gives it personality, but its understated presence really allows it to adapt to any room,” says Thom. As one of EQ3’s more traditional sofa collections, it has hints of mid-century Scandinavian furniture with a simple form. An evergreen piece like this can work in different spaces over the years.
Nothing livens up a space like a statement chair — and there’s no need to match any more. Create a sleek spot to read with the compact Suite chair and ottoman. In a warm, fashion-forward Cognac leather, it’s easy to maintain, and also customizable in EQ3’s range of fabric and leather. The Metro floor lamp, with its clean silhouette and exposed bulb offers a striking contrast.
“Contrary to popular belief, there are no rules when putting together a living space,” says Thom. “Mixing wood species, materials and colours is how you express yourself and create a space of your own. It can be difficult to match wood grains across a series of furniture pieces over the years, for instance, so embracing an eclectic vision gives you the freedom to evolve and edit your room.” Here, the Sage coffee table in natural oak pairs well with the smoked oak side table and complements the surrounding warm wood tones.
The Eve daybed offers clean lines with a plush feather back and cushions. Its minimalist profile blends seamlessly with modern interiors, and maintains sight lines and flow when placed near a window or used as a room divider. Here, it’s paired with a custom end table with a black marble top and the Petrie lamp, available as sconce, swing-arm wall lamp and freestanding fixture.
Recognizing the demand for modern glass-top dining tables, EQ3 challenged Shawn Place, the designer of the Place dining table collection (shown here) to combine the material with a wood base. The result feels fresh, and balances the weight of the wood.
Accessories are key to a modern aesthetic. Made and designed in Portugal, the Garrido stoneware collection‘s glazed interior contrasts with its sandy-hued, matte exterior. Free of traditional dinnerware details like wide lips and indentations, this minimalist tableware still brings warmth to the table.
If caffeine is part of your daily routine, consider quick and practical pour-over coffee prepared in mouth-blown glass. Available in clear or frosted Borosilicate glass — the heat-resistant material used to make science lab beakers — this coffee set turns an everyday task into a morning ritual. Here, it rests on the Pog oak board.
“The good thing about remaining within a relatively neutral colour palette alongside natural materials, is that it never goes out of fashion,” says Thom. “Solid materials always look great, and gain character with age.” The walnut Monarch bed is made to last.
For an elevated al fresco dining experience, outfit your deck with a minimalist Cape collection table. Its light yet durable aluminum frame has a versatile white powder-coated finish and warm wood accents for a truly inviting space. The tempered glass top makes cleanup easy.
Bring resort style home with the perfect poolside lounger. Also part of the Cape collection, this outdoor chaise features large castors for easy moving, and pairs well with the Cape side table. Just add a refreshing summer drink and a good read!
EQ3 released the Replay sofa collection in 2002 and it has been part of its product line since. “At the time of its first release, the construction and form were quite striking and innovative,” says Thom. Its unique shaping is still versatile, and in the last two years, the team has reworked the sofa to further improve comfort and reimagine its overall form. The soft-yet-sleek Replay now comes in sectional configurations ideal for larger spaces.
