Saucy Apple Cake Recipe

A fall dessert from Food Network star Trish Magwood. "This is yet another family favourite. The kids love the sauce — but what's not to love about sugar and butter! When apple season hits, my dad's orchard yields way more than 'an apple a day,' so here is a sweet ending."

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter, cubed, at room temperature
2 eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups chopped peeled apples (McIntosh or Gala)

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup 18% cream
1/4 cup butter

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9″ square cake pan.

Step 2: In a large bowl, beat together sugar, butter and eggs until light and fluffy.

Step 3: Combine flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Stir into batter with apples. Spread in prepared pan.

Step 4: Bake for 30-40 minutes or until centre of cake springs back when lightly touched or a toothpick comes out clean.

Step 5: To make the sauce, combine sauce ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring, until slightly thickened.

Step 6: Serve cake warm with warm sauce. If by lucky chance you have any sauce left over, it’s divine on top of vanilla ice cream.
