How To Create The Comfort Of A Hotel Room At Home

What makes a great guest room? According to Christine Germain, cofounder and copresident of Group Germain Hotels, the answer is simple: a dreamy and welcoming bed. Her team is currently working on a big renovation of the Toronto hotel’s bedrooms, adding dark felt walls and streamlining the palette for a cocooning effect. We asked the hotel owner to share her top tips on creating a space at home that has all the comforts of a hotel.

  • “Choose bedding made of natural fiber that breathes, like Egyptian cotton or bamboo rayon. These materials are more durable, soft to the touch and they absorb moisture for optimal comfort.
  • As for pillows, to assess whether a pillow is right for you, your body should be in the same alignment as when you stand upright. If you have the habit of sleeping on side, opt for a firm pillow. If you’re more the type to sleep on your back, your best ally is a soft pillow.
  • After several months of daily use, it is normal that the feather or down pillows sag a little. How can you make them regain their form? Put them in the dryer, individually, with five or six tennis balls for twenty minutes. Your pillows will become like new!”
