7 Kitchen Design Trends Featuring Black
Renovating or redecorating your kitchen this year? Discover the hottest 2016 design trends spotlighting black for traditional, modern and eclectic kitchens.
Trend 1: Warm & Mixed Metals
“One of the kitchen trends we are loving these days is the use of brass, rose gold and copper accents,” says Lindsay Konior, principal designer of Qanūk Interiors. “The new black stainless steel appliances are very complementary with these.” Don’t worry about keeping all of the metal finishes in your kitchen consistent, either. Mixing cool and warm metals adds interest.
Trend 2: Statement Lighting
Bring new life to your kitchen with a sculptural pendant light, a pretty brass chandelier or black library-style, wall-mounted task lights. Installed in a pair or a trio on a wall without upper cabinets, the latter bring edge to a space — and shed light on your cutting board.
Trend 3: Beautiful Contrast
“One of the biggest kitchen design developments today is contrasting cabinet colour,” says designer Ashley Davidson. “Not all uppers and lowers need to be the same anymore, and black stainless steel appliances accent this perfectly.” So go ahead and team dark lower cabinets and appliances from the new Samsung Black Stainless Steel Collection with white upper cabinets or open shelves for an airy, modern look.
Trend 4: Invisible Kitchens
If open-concept kitchen clutter makes you shudder, you’ll love the new streamlined kitchens hidden by panels and doors. “I’ve done some really beautiful invisible kitchens lately — they’re all about clean lines and integrated hardware,” says designer Sam Sacks of Sam Sacks Design. “Matching the appliances to the cabinetry is integral to the look.” For dark kitchens, appliances like the Samsung Black Stainless Steel Wi-Fi Slide-in Range with Flex Duo™ and Dual Door™ are a perfect fit. (Cool feature: The range lets you remotely monitor your cooktop and control the oven using an app on your mobile device, while receiving real-time alerts about your cooking.)
Trend 5: Coloured Cabinets
Take a chance with a new hue for your cabinetry. Rich tones offer a fresh alternative to classic white — from indigo to forest green to deep charcoal.
Trend 6: High-Impact Tile
Layer personality into your kitchen with a pretty, hand-painted tile backsplash or bold cement tiles on your floors. To showcase particularly unique tiles, consider devoting the floor space by the sink and stove to block out a tiled rug, or use it exclusively behind recessed shelves or the Samsung Black Stainless Steel Wi-Fi Slide-in Range with Flex Duo™ and Dual Door™ for a graphic hit. Even white subway tiles are getting a fresh look with grey or black grout, which is easier to maintain than white.
Trend 7: Black Stainless Steel
“The look of black stainless steel is an elegant twist on traditional stainless appliances, elevating the look of any kitchen,” says Konior. Decor-savvy foodies like the functionality of the latest appliances, too — like the Bridge and Triple Burners on the Samsung Black Stainless Steel Wi-Fi Slide-in Range with a choice of ring sizes so you can cook multiple dishes with various cookware.
