In the quaint county of Rutland, England, a family created a dream kitchen that doubles as a cooking school. A formerly dilapidated building was reborn as a sunny cooking spot with a wall of glass that overlooks the picturesque fields and trees outside. The kitchen was reimagined by English cabinetry firm deVOL and isn’t far from their Cotes Mill showrooms. Rutland is a conservation area full of beautiful old homes in tiny villages and, whilst picturesque, can make building projects a little tricky. Homeowners Rebecca and Matt decided to overhaul the house, which hadn’t been touched in 25 years and had ivy growing in through the windows and walls. The original kitchen was so tiny and dark, that they decided to rip it out immediately and create an extension to house the new kitchen and cooking school space.

The expansive island measures just over three metres long with a combination of pan drawers and open cabinetry, providing plenty of storage for everything a busy and hard-working kitchen needs, as well as being the main prep space during cooking classes.

The back run is made up of a big pantry cupboard, an Everhot range integrated cooker, an integrated bin, a dishwasher and a sink cabinet, a hand-aged bespoke copper worktop, and an integrated sink that glimmers in the changing light.

Lots of natural light seeps into the beautiful kitchen, thanks to the full wall of glazing and impressive vaulted ceilings which boast beautiful wood beams. Pantry Blue, the most popular color from deVOL’s paint collection, was the only shade for a room as special as this one and a perfect companion to the aged brass handles and fittings.

The finishing touch to this deVOL Kitchen was the brand’s Curiosity Cupboards. The glass hutch is painted black for a subtle distinction from the blue cabinets and resembles an heirloom piece.

With a lick of ‘Printer’s Black’ on the outside and a ‘Botanical’ back panel on the inside, it’s home to an array of choice spirits, liqueurs and the prettiest collection of glassware.
