Ask A Designer: How To Overhaul An Outdated Bathroom

In this Ask A Designer column, Lynda Reeves Design Studio’s Candace Thompson shares her advice for renovating an outdated bathroom.
Question: I’m renovating my bathroom to include a second sink, and I’m willing to totally redo the vanity wall. I’d love for it to feel brighter, fresher and warm. Any suggestions? — E.T., Toronto

Answer: I’m happy to see that you have a lot of wall space to work with! While there is always the option of having a custom vanity made, there are also plenty of beautiful, ready-made versions to choose from.
I suggest looking for a vanity that’s freestanding with two sinks in a light wood finish, similar to the one shown in this bathroom by Studio McGee.
This double vanity from RH allows you to choose from a range of countertops and finishes for a custom look.
This Italian Pietra Grigio marble would make for a great vanity countertop.
Install classic gooseneck sink faucets in polished nickel for a timeless look.
Paint the walls a warm white like Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee (OC-45).
Hang a large mirror above each sink — they’ll reflect natural light and brighten up the space.
Installing new sconces that flank the mirrors will provide task lighting; mount them at eye level.
Finish off the space with a beautiful handmade runner in warm colors and accessorize! Good luck, and enjoy your new bathroom.
