Ask A Designer: How To Add Serene Color & Pattern To A Bedroom
Updated on November 28, 2023

In this Ask A Designer column, Stacy Begg shares her tips for creating a relaxing respite.
Question: As you can see, my principal bedroom is a blank canvas. What color should I paint my walls, and should I paint my chest? Do you have any advice for adding art? — M.U, Apsley, Ontario

Answer: Your bedroom is a nice size, but it needs brightening up. We’re going for a similar look as this bedroom, designed by Stacey Smithers.

Instead of painting, I suggest wallpapering the walls in a pale blue pattern — I find this color soothing.

A new upholstered bed frame in a dark color will help anchor the room; choose one where the mattress sits low on a platform.

Next, select bed linens in muted, dusky shades, like this cotton coverlet.

Add a pair of mustard-colored accent pillows for a pop of color.

Layer in a patterned rug that picks up your palette, and cover your chair cushions in an off-white nubby fabric.

A pair of mid-century-inspired painted-white bedside tables will contrast with the headboard…

… and modern table lamps in a dark hue will add a graphic hit.

Next, soften the window with a roman blind in a coordinating fabric, and for your dresser, I recommend painting it black or charcoal gray. (Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal would look great.) Add a round mirror above the dresser, and finally, create a grouping of art on one wall to add some personality. Use different sizes and styles of frames to add visual interest. Enjoy your newly decorated bedroom!
