Step Inside Designer Carmeon Hamilton’s Bold & Beautiful Bedroom
Updated on November 28, 2023

Carmeon Hamilton wears many hats. As an interior designer at Nubi Interiors, merchandising consultant, environmental curator and blogger based in Memphis, Tennessee, she knows the importance of having a place of refuge after the end of a long day. She has been spending extra time in this 200-square-foot sanctuary during quarantine because “waking up to the view of our backyard through our new French doors still feels like a dream,” says the designer, who has over 77,000 followers and counting on Instagram.
We chatted with Carmeon about her newly-renovated principal bedroom — inspired by modern and Afro-centric design — and all of her favorite things in the cozy space (hint: Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito print, the color green and lots of plants). Scroll down to see what she had to say!

In just nine weeks, Carmeon brought her vision to life. She painted over the sterile baby blue walls with a crisp white color, which acts as a blank canvas for the graphic pops in the room. “I’m known for very moody spaces, and I knew that having a white room would be something that would completely blow people away,” she says. A high-contrast bed dressed in Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito pattern grounds the space. “I just made everything complement that fabric,” says Carmeon.

Instead of adding a piece of artwork above the bed, Carmeon dreamed up a statement millwork piece behind the headboard to make the bed pop. She painted a rectangular shape on the wall in Behr’s North Woods (the same dark green hue as the ceiling) and attached long and short pieces of wood overtop. “It’s one of my favorite elements in the space, after the bed,” she says.

The mid-century chest (pictured next to the French doors below) and nightstands were vintage finds, and together, cost less than a new dresser would in a big box store. “Buying vintage furniture is always my go-to,” says Carmeon. “Take time to find unique pieces that are great quality.”

For even more graphic punch, she added a few pieces of monochrome abstract art — some from Minted and others she created herself. “Painting abstract artwork is super easy because no one knows what they were supposed to look like anyway,” says Carmeon with a laugh.

There was almost no natural light when Carmeon and her husband bought this home, so she added French doors, which illuminated the space and extended the sightline to the exterior, where the couple hopes to add a deck one day. “That natural light from the doors really was like the match that lit off the fireworks — something ethereal and bright,” she says.

This delicate linework drawing is also from Minted. Stacks of books, a metallic jewelry tray and potted plants makes this curated corner feel even more personal.

When asked what inspired her to add green in her space, she says: “It’s really a mixture of my love for moody colors and my love for plants.” The leather armchair and textured drapery in this nature-inspired color add plenty of richness and depth.
