Discover The New Ikea Collection That Has Everyone Talking
Updated on July 26, 2023

It’s no secret that good lighting can make or break a room’s ambience. Dutch-Kiwi designer Sabine Marcelis knows this better than anyone. After working with luxury brands like Fendi and Hem, Sabine wanted to make her work accessible to a wider audience — so when Ikea called to collaborate on a lighting line, it was a match made in heaven. “I had total creative freedom with Ikea, which was really important to me. The designs that are now presented to the world are exactly the same as my first ideas,” says the designer. Here, we share a sneak peek of the limited edition collection, entitled Varmblixt, which translates to warm light in Swedish.

The collection’s crown jewels are a series of light fixtures, including the Varmblixt lamp that will be integrated into Ikea’s permanent collection. “This is where design becomes almost a piece of art,” says Ikea product design developer Chiara Ripalti. “The beauty of each form, together with the color palette, brings it to a different level.”

The collection also features textiles, with two wool rugs in warm colors and geometric shapes. Their low pile make them perfect for high-traffic areas.

In addition to lighting and textiles, the Varmblixt collection also includes smaller housewares. Two glass serving bowls shaped like donuts – Sabine’s signature shape – are a playful way to store food or objects.

Glass barware like the champagne coupes and drink sticks are perfect for entertaining.

For Sabine, this collaboration is an opportunity for her to democratize her unique designs. “I don’t think you should bring anything into your house that does not make you happy or trigger some sort of emotional response,” says Sabine. “I’m curious to see how and where these different objects will be placed.”
