Get Design Advice From Jonathan Adler’s New Show
Published on May 31, 2022

Potter and designer Jonathan Adler’s work always makes us smile, so it’s always fun to get his take on design. That’s why we’re excited about his new 13-episode show, Decorate Like A Designer on Wondrium, a subscription video-on-demand service with a library of more than 7,500 hours of instructional content. As Jonathan notes in the series trailer: everyone is a brand. “Use your design journey to remind yourself of who you are and who you want to be,” he says.
Jonathan, who began his design career in pottery, first came to fame in the 1990s when iconic NY shopping mecca Barneys bought his collection of pots, leading to a store in Soho. Soon he branched into more home design, and today Jonathan Adler is an interior design brand with stores worldwide and a full slate of residential and commercial projects. In Decorate Like A Designer’s 13 episodes, Jonathan helps viewers find their unique “brand” with a foolproof formula, while covering practical topics like how to use color, layout and flow, plus ideas for outdoor design.

On Acrylic
“I’m into acrylic. It’s the perfect blend of simplicity and glamor, modern and traditional. It has a big presence while being weightlessly transparent. It’s clearly cool.”

On Graphic Rugs
“When it comes to decorating, I exhort people to create a chic foundation and then accessorize with abandon. Nothing creates a chicer foundation than a graphic rug if you ask me (and, thankfully, you have!). Start with a graphic rug and you won’t look back.”

On Mood Lighting
“Put all of your lighting on dimmers. You and your guests will look younger and richer than you really are.”

On Pedestal Tables
“Have an unused corner you don’t know what to do with? Plop a pedestal! Pedestals are every decorator’s secret weapon. You’re welcome!”

On Bar Carts
“Even if you don’t drink, get a bar cart. A bar cart provides instant swagger. They make young people seem sophisticated, old people seem young, and everyone seem fun.”

On Decorative Feathers
“Flowers are so yesterday! Instead, show your design bona fides with feathers. There are few decorating fails that a festoon of feathers won’t fix.”

On Tiny Tables
“More is more — especially when it comes to tiny tables. No matter where you sit in your home, you should be able to reach out and set down a drink.”

On The Color Blue
“Colors got you confused? Try blue. Blue is a miracle color — every shade of blue goes with every other shade of blue.”
