This Graphic Bathroom Makes A Fashion Statement With Drapery
If a black stand-alone tub could be considered a LBD and the pendant above a necklace, the graphic drapery in this principal ensuite has to be the pashmina. Designer Mariam Aboutaam of Kylemore freely admits she took a high-low fashion approach to the graphic bathroom in this new townhouse model home on a golf course in Markham, Ontario. As inspiration, Mariam cites a trip to New York. “Everything was covered in floor-to-ceiling marble; it was a real theme in luxe principal bathrooms,” she says. “And I noticed how high-contrast neutrals created a sophisticated, soothing, spa-like retreat that’s great to relax and unwind in after a long day.” If you can’t make it to the Big Apple, this bathroom offers an alternative escape.

Mariam’s Design Tips
- Use Drapery As Art. Dress the windows in a bold pattern for visual interest — no framing required!
- Be Brassy. Warm up a palette and lend a custom look with brass in a special finish.
- Light Work. A luxurious pendant formalizes a bathroom and creates ambient lighting.
“I wanted a more refined and tailored look for the vanity,” says Mariam. “The rift-cut oak is so beautiful, and I felt that it should have a moment, like a piece of custom furniture in the bathroom. I didn’t want hardware, so I used integrated chamfered finger-pull openings on the drawer faces.”
“This space is all about getting a luxury look on a budget,” says Mariam. “Marble can be expensive, so porcelain is a great alternative.” She used two different sizes of porcelain tile to line the shower. “The types of colors available are incredible and, to the naked eye, it’s hard to tell the difference.”
