This Loft Kitchen Packs A Graphic Punch With Hits Of Black & Oak
Published on November 26, 2020

A graphic palette can seem intimidating, especially if it’s in a small space — but it’s a risk worth taking, says designer Nam Dang-Mitchell. She gave this 103-square-foot loft kitchen its modern flavor with just two ingredients: hits of black and a toasty envelope of oak. “I knew the graphic nature of the marble and the blackened steel vent hood would contrast nicely with the wood,” says Nam. “Every element should highlight and enhance the material next to it.” She was careful to add that eye-catching impact while avoiding the “dated bachelor pad” look, which Nam says can happen if black finishes are too glossy. Instead, she used smooth, matte finishes and grounded everything with classic, chevron-pattern flooring. The final result is simply fabulous. Scroll down!

A handsome blonde oak table is roomy enough to host friends but can also double as an island or desk. “I wanted to keep the design simple yet strong, and let the natural beauty of the materials speak for themselves,” she says.

Standout features include a custom-finished smoky black vent hood. “It wasn’t expensive to do,” says Nam, “and you get a lot of bang for your buck!”

The Pietra Grey marble shelf (which continues as the backsplash and counter material) is framed by handsome floor-to-ceiling cabinets. A wall-mounted faucet is both stylish and functional when counter space is at a premium.

How To Get The Look
- White oak cabinets with black edge pulls
- Chevron-pattern blond wood flooring
- Matte black marble counter and backsplash
- Sculptural black and brass light fixtures
