Find Out What Designer Sarah Sherman Samuel Is Into (And Over)
Updated on July 26, 2023

We recently sat down with designer and artist Sarah Sherman Samuel who just launched a line of furniture under her brand, SSS Atelier. Sarah is working on a fabric collection with Lulu and Georgia that’s expected to launch in the spring. The Michigan-based designer creates personality-packed spaces that celebrate the beauty of imperfection, nodding to the wabi-sabi aesthetic. Here, she breaks it down by sharing her latest design preferences and predictions. Scroll down!

Design Motto: Your home should be a reflection of you. Fill it with things you love.
Atmosphere You Like To Create: Welcoming.

Sarah designed a custom island–eating counter for this guest suite in Ada, Mich.
Design Idea You’re Excited To Try: Patterned café curtains. These remind me of restaurants in Paris and London and would be fun to incorporate into a contemporary home.
Into: Deep, rich colors.
Over: Anything described as “modern farmhouse.”

The private members’ lounge and co-working space at Inness in Upstate New York.
Recent Inspirations: Staying at Inness, a 220-acre pastoral resort in the Catskills. It was an amazing place to unplug.

If You Could Buy Only One More Thing For Your Home: Cloud Perch by Simone Bodmer-Turner. The scale and movement are gorgeous in this piece. I would put it standing alone on a plinth or as a dining room centerpiece.

On Your Coffee Table: Books, a marble tray, vintage candlesticks and a plant.
Item In Your Home That Most Reflects Who You Are: The plaster piece above my fireplace, which is one of my own original designs.
