Our editors make House & Home ‘s magazine pages (and social media accounts) look picture-perfect, and their own homes are no exception. Here, they share how they plan to refresh their spaces for fall, and you just might want to steal every single idea! From embracing moody palettes to layering in texture in the bedroom, these tips will inspire you to welcome autumn in your own home.
“I’m so inspired by this look we featured in our October 2018 issue. The bold, sculptural shapes of the furniture mixed with the whimsy of the wallpaper is such a powerful juxtaposition. I tend to stay away from overtly feminine design so this hard/soft mix lets me bring in a bit of pretty while still staying true to my more masculine decorating self. Not only that, the moody blue color palette and black accents remind me of the fall evenings to come and have a cozy, cocoon-like effect.” — Emma Reddington, Editor-in-Chief

“In the summer, our bed on the third floor is too hot for a duvet so we sleep with just a sheet. Come fall, I get excited about layering up the bed again with a duvet and extra blanket. I’m looking forward to chilly fall nights!” — Kai Ethier, Senior Market Editor

“I pare down my decor in the spring and load it back up in the cooler months, so I’m excited about having more pillows, throw blankets, candles and favorite objects out in general. I’m also excited about enjoying fires in the wood stove at the cottage again!” — Jennifer Koper, Senior Editor

“When the temperature drops, the number of throw blankets in my home skyrockets. Every nook is naturally given a dose of warmth with plush layers that allow for decorated moments — think a faux fur number draped over the arm of a sofa or piled neatly into an oversized storage basket. Thanks to these stylish storage solutions, taking catnaps — whether it’s on a daybed or sprawled across the sofa — are a breeze.” — Harleen Sidhu, Assistant Editor

“I’ve always been drawn to this bedroom designed by Denisa Nica. Something about the luxe headboard, blue wallpaper, dark drapery and faux fur throw puts me in the mood for fall. I pull out my extra bed linens, light candles and spend more time getting cozy in my bedroom.” — Day Helesic, Managing Editor

“Just because I live in a petite apartment, doesn’t mean I don’t embrace the chilly weather with open arms. Aside from doing my annual shop for autumnal candles and soaps, I recently picked up some decorative gourds and corn at the grocery store to sprinkle around my abode. It was a simple — and super inexpensive — change, but it provides a touch of the harvest in the middle of the concrete jungle.” — Victoria Christie, Digital Editor

“Changing over my bedding is my favorite part of moving into the chillier months. It’s such a small, but impactful change. I’ll be pulling out my Hudson’s Bay blanket and layering it over top of our down quilt. It’s instant coziness!” — Ceri Marsh, Acting Editorial Director

“There is no need to clutter up your space when transitioning into a new season. I’m a simple man who likes simple things. I want a cozy, comfortable space with warm fall colors, a touch of wood and a kilim rug to walk barefoot around the house.” — Frank Ngako, Digital Editor, Maison & Demeure

“All my tropicals experience a major growth spurt from summering outside, but in the fall, I don’t take any chances on losing them to a cold night. The pots can be a decor statement on their own, so instead of boring terracotta, I pick planters with visual interest: I am obsessed by this concrete version studded with shells.” — Wendy Jacob, Features Editor

“My bedroom is fairly light and bright (similar to this room by designer Susan Burns), with mint lamps perched on my side tables and walls such a soft shade of blue they almost look white, so in the fall the space can sometimes feel cold. Adding plush pieces like a nubby throw over my duvet or shag rug under my bed gives my room added warmth and texture for those chilly fall days that I long for.” — Bianca Zanotti, Assistant Design Editor
