English-inspired Farmhouse
Designer Ashley Montgomery’s goal for this heritage-inspired kitchen was to find a cabinet color that brought warmth but wasn’t overpowering. Benjamin Moore’s Intrigue (1580) was the winner. “The homeowner is from Nottinghamshire, England, so he wanted to recreate that English country warmth,”
An apron sink and brass faucet by the window conjures a classic farmhouse feel. “I feel like I use the bridge faucet by Perrin & Rowe in every single project — it’s like the jewelry of the kitchen, she says”
Elegant Farmhouse
They key ingredient in today’s farmhouse kitchen is a mix of rustic and refined elements. This English-style modern farmhouse kitchen features rough-hewn beams, a hefty butcherblock counter and reclaimed woods stools.
Organic concrete pendants on heavy-duty chains bump up against the sophistication of marble-look porcelain, creamy face frame cabinets and brass and black accents.
Farmhouse Style Meets French Bistro
In this white and wood kitchen, designer Candice Brown used Oyster White by Sherwin-Williams for the cabinets, a wood island, floating shelves and rattan pendants to achieve the farmhouse-inspired look.
“The design evolved from roots in farmhouse style with a hint of French bistro,” says Candace. White subway tile with dark grout and a mix of lacquered and unlacquered brass warms up the white space.
A banquette off the kitchen island has a custom-made harvest table and a rustic bench that came from a local church. “It’s the perfect balance between new and old,” says Candice, who chose black modern Windsor-style chairs from Urban Barn for the breakfast nook.
New French Country
Laurence Pons Lavigne and Mélanie Cherrier of Blanc Marine Intérieurs designed this Modern Farmhouse kitchen in Lévis, Que with New French Country style. The kitchen cabinets are painted in a putty hue and complement the brass and red oak wood throughout.
A dark wood island on tall legs has apothecary-style drawers and brass cup pulls reads vintage. “The homeowner embraces the antique, so she didn’t want a space with a clinical feel,” says Mélanie.
Contemporary Country
Les Ensembliers put a fresh and modern spin on Farmhouse style in this kitchen in Bolton, Que. The hardworking island includes both a workstation and area to to sit and gather. “There were two things we wanted to be able to do in the kitchen: to be comfy in sweatpants and to be able to host an elegant party,” says the homeowner.
The palette is soft and serene with custom cabinets in warm oak and a cream-colored backsplash tile that envelops the space. Open shelves with a careful selection of everyday items flank the range.
A walk-in pantry features green shelves and houses an extra fridge, coffee station and overflow food items and dishes.
Italian Farmhouse
Ami McKay designed this kitchen in North Vancouver with an Italian country vibe. The homeowners love to entertain and requested ample counter space for making homemade pasta and pizza — and two dishwashers for clean up.
Large-scale porcelain checkerboard tiles are complemented by a bold Calacatta Viola marble on the island counter, backsplash and trim. An Italian lime plaster–finished vent hood is flanked by exposed wood beams for a rustic touch.
Classic Modern Farmhouse
In this classic kitchen, white oak cabinets and floors conjure the well-loved farmhouse vibe, while crisp quartz counters and black hardware give the style a modern update.
A zellige tile backsplash brings a warm, organic feel to the kitchen. “I adore rustic, farmhouse design with a palette that blends white, wood and black,” says the homeowner.
Sophisticated Farmhouse
This cottage kitchen boasts not one, but two islands. “We wanted that vintage look, so we stained the white oak counter three times with a special treatment to add a tactile, textured effect,” says designer Mélanie Cherrier of Blanc Marine Intérieurs.
Exposed beams and vintage kitchen stools play up the rustic country house vibe.
Fresh Farmhouse
When it came to designing her Eastern Townships farmhouse, actress Karine Vanasse turned to designer Audrée Kemp Bélanger of AKB Design. The bland kitchen was quickly transformed with beams, shiplap, statement lighting and plenty of brass.
“Our objective was to make it feel timeless, classic and a touch modern.”says Audrée.
Classic Country
Designer Mia Parres helped her clients create a warm, updated kitchen with classic country style. Custom-stained herringbone floors tie in nicely with the oak edge on the custom vent hood, which Mia says gives the kitchen more dimension and a traditional look. The combo of warm colors, marble backsplash and wood creates a cosy space that’s timeless and on trend.
“The shelving opened up the space and allowed me to display my favorite pieces,” says the homeowner. “We had a clear vision of what we wanted, and Mia brought it to the next level, showing us how to enhance the ceiling height and create an airy feeling.”
Heritage Farmhouse
To drive home an authentic heritage look, Sara Wood chose hardworking elements including a farmhouse sink and raw brass faucet. Cabinets in a sooty black look like they’re tinged by woodsmoke. Mellow woods, seen in the hutch and black walnut floors (milled from an old tree that fell in the backyard), soften the black and white palette. She also opted for a furniture-like prep table that everyone could gather around.
