See How This Fashion Editor Saves Space In Her NYC Loft!

Most homes have one room that’s a little bit of everything but nothing in particular. Marie Claire senior fashion editor Zanna Roberts Rassi describes hers as a “bedroom-slash-playroom-slash-sitting room-slash-I don’t know!” With the help of designer Sally Gotfredson of The Studio at One Kings Lane, Zanna and her husband Mazdack transformed the small room in their Manhattan loft into a multifunctional retreat with “NYC-by-way-of-England” style.

Since space was at a premium, double-duty pieces were chosen, like a white sofa bed and a vintage armoire.

Zanna requested color so Sally went for a bold red-on-red scheme. A striped rug, velvet chair and statement wall with a playful red and white wallpaper offers a showstopping look.

To save floor space, Sally placed a pair of swing-arm sconces above the sofa and went with shelf-style side tables to house books.

A mix of graphic striped and floral-print pillows breaks up the room’s red-on-red palette.

The fuzzy lambswool ottoman is “practical yet it’s fun,” Zanna tells One Kings Lane. “The girls love it to bounce on and launch themselves off of, but we can also pop a tray on it and play games or build puzzles.”

No playroom is complete without a play tent. This one has a sheepskin rug with a pile of throw pillows offering an extra soft landing spot.

The antique armoire is “larger than life,” Zanna says. “It’s something out of The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe.”

A row of baskets on the bottom shelf keeps favorite toys at toddler height, while the top shelves house bedding and towels for guests.

For a personal touch, a column of the girls’ artwork is displayed in gold frames, serving as a mini gallery beside the armoire.

With the trundle-style sofa bed extended, the space becomes a guest bedroom without crashing the girls’ play room.“The fact that we’ve got this ‘slashie’ room that looks like neither a playroom or a bedroom but like a chic living space is genius,” says Zanna.
