Spicy Homemade Ginger Ale

Recipe: Eric Vellend

Want to stay hydrated this summer without dipping into alcohol? Well, we’ve got the perfect beverage for non-tipplers. Try our spicy homemade ginger ale, a thirst-quenching alternative to iced tea or lemonade. There’s only one catch — once you get a taste of this zippy, lemon-kissed ginger ale, you’ll be hooked for life.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup ginger, chopped
  • 3 strips lemon zest
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 36 oz. soda water
  • 3 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Ice
  • Mint sprigs and lemon wedges (for garnish)

Directions

Yield: Serves 6

  1. In a medium saucepan, place ginger, lemon zest, sugar and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer; cook 10 minutes. Remove from heat; let stand for 30 minutes. Pass through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl. Cool ginger syrup and transfer to a mason jar. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Place 2 oz. of ginger syrup in each of
6 highball glasses. Add 6 oz. soda and 2 tsp lemon juice to each glass. To each, add ice and garnish with mint and lemon wedges.
