DIY: Two-Tone Chair

Use paint to transform a basic chair into a fun style statement.

You’ll need a wood chair, painter’s tape, two contrasting paint colors, a paint brush, and sandpaper.

1. Prep for painting. Go over your chair with fine sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.

2. Choose the palette. Watery blue pairs beautifully with a white base, but consider other combinations as well, like seafoam green, red or white as the accent color on a raw-wood base.

3. Complete the effect. First, cover the entire chair in your base color and let dry. Next, tape off the areas of the chair where you want your accent color. We painted the bottom few inches of our chair’s legs periwinkle, as well as the top third of the back to achieve that dipped-in-paint look. The key is not to paint the chair exactly half blue and half white — we went only about 2″ down the back of each spindle with the periwinkle to achieve an asymmetrical look.
