This Home Will Inspire You To Make Daring Design Moves

H&H‘s Ones To Watch designers Carey Mudford and Erin Coe found the perfect outlet in this gracious home in a sought-after uptown Toronto neighborhood. Their client lives in the house with his three children, two German shepherds and a collection of daring art. A dream for this owner who loves to entertain, the home’s capacious rooms ramble over 6,887 square feet.
The classic-modern house puts surface materials first — nearly every room is adorned with eye-catching natural stone slabs. For example, the kitchen “has the boldest countertop I’ve ever done,” says Carey of the Patagonia quartz with its golden swirls. “We knew using this stone would be taking a risk — you’re either going to love it or hate it,” says Erin. And thankfully, the client loved it.

The kitchen has an arresting stone waterfall countertop and a slab backsplash backlit with LEDs for extra effect. “We framed the window including the jamb in a slab material,” says Carey. “It’s very clean-looking.” A black metal vent hood and pantry wall (far right) ground the space.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the kitchen’s dining area offer a leafy view. The light fixture’s multiple shades can be adjusted for different configurations.

An iceberg blue marble chimney breast gives the formal living room an impressive focal point. Antiqued mirrors flank the fireplace and visually expand the space.

“A round dining table is the most social for entertaining,” says Erin. “You can have a conversation without leaning over anyone’s plate.” Chairs upholstered in a light blue crushed velvet reference the fireplace in the adjacent living room.

In the family room, black-framed windows are a graphic counterpoint to pale walls and a Bianco Dolomiti Venato marble fireplace surround.

The smoking lounge is a moody retreat that’s equipped with a cigar humidor and vent system. Pencil-point wood plank flooring with inlays of brass and black marble, walnut walls and a black honed Belvedere granite fireplace surround create a handsome envelope.

A backlit onyx headboard creates a dramatic backdrop in the principal bedroom. Brushed brass table lamps and a brass chandelier suit the room’s warm palette.

The spa-like ensuite has a soaker tub placed to capture the view and a custom vanity with metal inlay.
