This Designer’s Whimsical Bathroom Feels Like A Lush Oasis
Published on April 3, 2020

Powder rooms are the perfect place to take a daring design risk, but have you ever thought about going bold in your principal bathroom? That’s exactly what Boston-based designer Cecilia Casagrande did. Over three months, she transformed her Victorian home’s ensuite with dreamy Bagatelle Panel wallpaper from Christian Lacroix and rich emerald green tile in the shower. “Bathrooms are so often shades of white, but I think that color is invigorating, inspirational and brings warmth and joy,” she says.
Scroll down to learn more about the dramatic makeover and why we should all take more design risks.

House & Home: What was your vision?
Cecilia Casagrande: “I wanted my husband and I to feel like we were entering an exotic place, somewhere that brings us joy. That is why the bathroom has a very international feel. The mural wallpaper is of gardens outside of Paris, the shower tile reminds us of the jade pool in our hotel in Siem Reap, Cambodia, and the floor tile represents our time in Oaxaca, Mexico.”

H&H: How did you keep the bathroom from looking busy?
CC: “I made sure I had good storage, so everything can be kept in a drawer or cabinet, and the wallpaper can be the star. I also chose a dark palette — black and emerald green — so the colors didn’t distract from the dreamy print, just framed it.”

H&H: Tell us about the budget-friendly elements!
CC: “I chose a simple black vanity online and put on my own cabinet handles. The stone was leftover from a previous project. The mirror and flush mount are both from Schoolhouse, and the accessories are from CB2 and Anthropologie.”

H&H: Why did you choose green tile? It’s a big trend for 2020!
CC: “Green — especially emerald green — happens to be my favorite color, and I’ve seen this trend coming to its peak this year. I am so excited that my shower is right on trend, but will also be long lasting!”

H&H: What are your tips for taking a daring design risk in a bathroom?
CC: “Go for one element that makes your heart go wow for then let the rest follow along.”
