As a champion for marginalized voices, John prioritized working with underrepresented sellers for the collection, including two members of the historic Gullah basket weavers community, part of the Etsy Uplift Makers Program .
Passed down for more than eight generations, the Gullah basket weaving crafting technique is considered the oldest African craft tradition in the United States – dating back to the 1700s when enslaved rice farmers first brought the art form to South Carolina. This Crowned Stand Basket is handmade by a 6th Generation Gullah Weaver and took over 200 hours to complete. It is hand-woven using sweetgrass, palmetto, bulrush and pine needles.
