Now that the new year is upon us, we asked our experts the question that’s on everyone’s minds: What’s your new year’s design resolution? Click through to find out what our editors have planned for their own homes in 2016.
“ There’s a piece of art that’s been leaning in there for a while that I will finally hang up, a daybed that’s going to my sister, a vintage globe that’s also going to her, and stacks of pillows that will go to charity. Then, I’ll do my best to stop stuff from piling up!”
“In my previous house, every decision I made was related to resale. I just bought a new home, and this time I’d like to really go for it. I’m talking wallpaper, people!”
“Not just in terms of paint, which is an easy switch. Come to think of it, a pair of sunny yellow silk drapes recently caught my eye…”
“One cool project I saw recently involved taking pages from discount coffee table art books and framing them. Inexpensive prints also look great if you frame and mount them beautifully — it makes such a huge difference.”
“There are some great online art stores out there that offer affordable prints, like Minted , that I need to check out. Smaller-scale textile designers, like Lulu DK and Rebecca Atwood, also sell a range of beautiful, budget-friendly prints that I’m loving now.”
“Last summer, I worked with a landscape architect in my backyard — since I’m definitely more of a decor person, not a planting person — and she taught me how to do all sorts of things: how to plan an outdoor space, how to select the right plants, how to plant them. It was so much more fun than I thought! So this spring I’m going to work with the same person in my front yard. And I figure I might as well do some exterior painting and replace the railings while I’m there.”
“I have a lot of stuff that I really enjoy, but sometimes it gets a little…hoader-ish. I’m planning to do a combination of scaling back, and incorporating some smart storage solutions.”
“I’m definitely on the decluttering bandwagon, too. I figure if it’s easy to put back, it’s far more likely to actually get put back!”
“I want to live in the present, with what I already own, and not always be thinking about what might look better. I think we all want to curb our spending and not think about shopping so much — especially at this time of year. Remember when you were really excited about that great piece at one point? Why not now? I think it’s all about choosing and appreciating things with longevity. Don’t be afraid to plant roots.”
