Halifax designers Colin Blanchard and Kenneth McRobbie of 31 Westgate give traditional style fresh appeal. This year, the design duo celebrate the 10th anniversary of their retail and design business, 31 Westgate. Their current projects include an 1820s farmhouse in Nova Scotia. Here, they share their design preferences and predictions.
Mood You’d Like To Create In A House: Rooms must have a point of view or they wind up feeling contrived. We aim for a mix of eras with enduring beauty.
Design Motto: Give it personality.
Key Influence On Design Trends: Self-expression. People are embracing bolder layers, such as botanical wall coverings combined with stripes, vintage sari fabrics and pictorial prints.
Item In Your Home That Most Reflects Who You Are: Our tufted brown velvet sectional with nailhead trim. It’s very gentleman’s club.

Choose Any House In The World To Redo: A William Cody pavilion-style house in Palm Desert, California, with almost no division between indoor and outdoor living. In Canada, we rarely have the opportunity to design this type of space.
