Hot Take: SmithErickson Designs Share Their Preferences & Predictions

Stephanie Smith (left) and Jenelle Erickson joined forces to form Calgary-based SmithErickson Designs in 2015. We fell in love with the Scandi-inspired main floor they designed for a young family. Here, the duo shares their current design obsessions, the looks they’re over, their dream project and more!

Mood You’d Like To Create In A House: We want our clients to have a sense of calm when they walk into their space and be surrounded by pieces that make them happy.

Design Motto: Be thoughtful and approachable.

Into: Our designs are often light and airy, but we’ve recently ventured over to the dark side of the color spectrum for a moody feel. Specifically, using the same deep color on the walls, ceiling and millwork.

Over: Wall applications like rustic barnboard.

Current Inspiration:  Spain. We were lucky to go in the fall of 2019, and we were in awe of the use of natural stone and intricate mosaics. And the doors! There were so many interesting ones.

How Often You Change Up Your Own Homes: We both switch out items in our homes seasonally to freshen them up. Just a few throw pillows here and there…. We may have an obsession with throw pillows.

Dream Project: Our office! Our vision is to have a clean backdrop for our creative juices to flow: mostly white walls, plus a vintage floral-print wallpaper juxtaposed with modern furniture and some unique articulating sconces for task lighting.
