This High-Fashion Kitchen Exudes Old World Elegance
Updated on April 24, 2020

Real-estate agent and homeowner Debbie Penzo is a seasoned pro when it comes to renovations. She and her developer husband, John Penzo, have embraced both traditional and modern styles, but for this home, they wanted to conjure an elegant, European look that stands the test of time. “I love the overall glam feel of this kitchen,” says Debbie.
Project lead Natasha Penzo, principal of design-build firm Urban Blueprint, notes it was important to the homeowners, who also happen to be her parents, that the kitchen have a sense of warmth that would improve with age. “We used a lot of unlacquered brass that will patinate over time,” says Natasha.

Brass pendants, hardware and detailing take this kitchen into glam territory. “It looks white but, actually, the cabinets have a blush undertone and the walls are a mauve-grey for warmth,” says Natasha.

A handcrafted La Cornue range is complemented by a pot filler from a heritage British firm.

A generous marble backsplash and dark oak flooring emphasize the European look. The integrated panelled refrigerator is clean-lined and looks seamless.

Designer James Davie suggested an oval mullion detail for the glass-fronted uppers; Debbie loves the way the shape frames her collection of Baccarat crystal and dishware.

Flamestitch fabric on the chair backs, an ebony-stained dining table and charcoal-painted mullions update the dining area. “Our kitchen also functions as our family room and dining area, so the layout is important,” says Debbie. “Our children and grandchildren can hang out comfortably with us while we cook, laugh and play.”
