Modern Makeover: A Scandinavian-Inspired Vancouver Home
Published on May 23, 2018

Sometimes, it’s what’s outside that counts, especially when you live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. For design pro Colette Soros, co-owner of Vancouver’s Parliament Interiors, the views from her family’s home were worth hanging on to, so instead of relocating for more space, they decided to renovate. “We love our home — we have a view of downtown Vancouver and the North Shore mountains,” says Colette. In order to take full advantage of the vista, they opted to add another floor to the house.
Inspired by her Norwegian roots and Scandinavian-style houses, Colette worked closely with Etheridge Home Renovation to plan for high ceilings, skylights, decks off the front and back of the house, and lots of natural wood finishes. Click through to see the dramatic before and after.

“I figured we’d lift the layout and have the living, kitchen and dining area at the top of the house and the bedrooms would remain on the main floor,” says Colette.

“The living room is our cozy space,” says Colette. Outfitted with a gas fireplace, this room is where the family likes to lounge at the start and end of busy days. The view of the city and the mountains inspired the renovation.

White Ikea cabinetry and countertops capture the minimalist Scandinavian style Colette was after. “I don’t like a lot of clutter,’ she says. “The cabinets have recessed handles on the doors, which simplifies the look.”

“I put snacks and dishes within arm’s reach for the kids, who are right at home cooking in the kitchen,” says Colette.

Colette designed a built-in banquette that runs along the wall and provides enough seating for family and guests in the dining area.

The family room on the main floor is where everyone gathers for Netflix marathons. The small walnut art frames on the walls hold maps of some of Colette’s favorite places: Vancouver, the Hawaiian islands, Kyoto and Tokyo.

The upper back deck is furnished with low bench-style seating for a lounge vibe.

Colette chose a wood headboard, branch art, cork table lamps and layers of natural textures to give the principal bedroom modern, organic style.

The white, caramel and grey patterned tile in the bathroom was Colette’s starting point. “I love this tile!” she exclaims. A glassed-in shower was added to make the room more functional, and a floating vanity creates a more spacious feel.

In Tate (pictured) and Jasper’s bedroom, a graphic black and white rug and striped bedding are playful yet timeless. A shelf with yo-yos and a quirky bird photo add color.

Willow’s bedroom is small in size but big on personality. To highlight the eclectic art above the bed, Colette painted an accent wall in Benjamin Moore’s Cinder (AF-705), a warm, dark grey.
