Step Inside The California House From Nancy Meyers’ New Movie, Home Again
Reese Witherspoon may play the star in the hit new rom com Home Again, but her character’s Spanish-style L.A. house deserves major applause for its supporting role. Produced by Nancy Meyers, the movie is her daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s directorial debut — and it’s clear she shares her mother’s knack for interiors. Introduced within the first few minutes of the film, the Brentwood home is a polished bohemia of terracotta floors, wicker chairs, nubby wovens, French blue stripes and a whole lot of pink.
Production designer Ellen Brill and set decorator Nicole Cates created a magical setting for the film’s charming storyline to unfold. Reese plays interior designer Alice Kinney, who moves back to California with her two young daughters after separating from her husband in New York, and lets three twenty-something filmmakers crash in her guest house — which is just as dreamy as the main house. Plush, inviting furniture atop layered rugs offer a relaxed look in the living room. Stacks of coffee table books and art of the California skyline propped above the fireplace create a sense of place. “The house is really a character in this movie,” Hallie told One Kings Lane. “It had to have a magical feeling to it.”
A marble-top Tulip table brings a hit of mid-century modern to the bohemian space. Woven roman blinds on the windows don’t detract from the lush view of the yard.
Nothing is too precious — a striped ottoman is ideal for kicking your feet up after a dip in the backyard pool. California living at its finest.
In this sweet corner, a cheerful pink chair is grounded by ceramic lamps and linen drapes. “The set is a mix of East Coast and West Coast styles,” notes Nicole. “So it’s laid-back but pedigreed at the same time, which lends the spaces complexity so that they don’t feel like a showroom.”
Reese’s character is inspired in part by her real-life interior designer, Mark D. Sikes, whose American-meets-European style is visible throughout the space — and no doubt inspired Alice’s collection of ginger jars.
The warm colors of the abstract art above this honey-colored console mimic the California sun.
A Beni Ourain rug creates a plush walkway in the hall, and speaks to the exotic bench perched under a display of black and white artwork.
Neutrals tone down the juicy orange and pink headboard in the bedroom, which is the backdrop to one of the movie’s most heightened scenes.
Outside, modern lounge chairs and white umbrellas make way for an azure pool. Terracotta pots make the space feel like an extension of the home.
