When it comes to organizing, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin — the duo behind The Home Edit and experts of the upcoming Netflix series of the same name (produced by none other than Reese Witherspoon!) — have got it down to a science. From kitchens to laundry rooms to closets, these master organizers have transformed a myriad of spaces into tidy, decluttered sanctuaries. Having revamped the homes of celebrities like Mandy Moore and Emma Roberts, we caught up with The Home Edit to talk all things closets and how to groom this often forgotten space for fall.
“Closets can be hard because there tends to be an emotional aspect to getting rid of clothing. Rather than going through every item of clothing separately, start by grouping them in categories. It will help you see where you have unnecessary duplicates and decide which items are worthy of keeping.”
“Create seasonal closet bins for summer and winter. Place one on a high shelf, and one within reach, and rotate them as the weather changes.”
“If your closet doesn’t have drawers, create your own by using baskets. We suggest folding shorts, work-out clothes, pyjamas, t-shirts, and even socks and underwear.”
“If you’re short on hanging space, fold your denim and sweaters and store them on a shelf with dividers to keep them neatly contained. It’s also a way to keep your favorite fall staples easy to access.”
“When boots aren’t stored correctly, they tend to lose shape and take up too much space. To avoid this, store your boots in clear or labeled boot boxes and stack them on your shelf. If you’d rather store your boots upright, use boot shapers to provide structure.”
“Arrange your clothing by type, then color coordinate that category. Lining up your shirts, pants, dresses, etc., by color is a simple way to give your closet a polished look and makes items easier to find.”
“Huggable hangers , pull-out bins and low shelving give kids easier access to their items and the independence to dress themselves in the morning. We also suggest sorting their clothing by color and labeling bins so they know exactly where to find things and where to put them away.”
“Keep all your hangers uniform. We are partial to slim velvet hangers, but whatever you use just make sure to invest in a matching set. It’s the single biggest game changer for any closet and instantly elevates your space. Remember, consistency is key, so try to buy storage containers in the same collection or at least the same color. Matching products instantly elevate a space, while mismatched products can make it look sloppy. Streamlining your supplies will make everything look polished — even storage!”
“If your bedroom is short on space, you can eliminate the need for a dresser by adding hanging shelf organizers — like a custom Elfa system — to your closet. T-shirts, sweaters and jeans can be stacked on each shelf, and drawer inserts can be added to hold socks and underwear. With a variety of sizes and hanging bar options, it’s a small space essential.”
“Acrylic magazine dividers make excellent handbag holders. You can keep small to medium handbags upright and delicate ones in their own compartment. It also works well for clutches or bags without a structured bottom!”
